However, your favorite Like a Dragon characters are still present. Ishin has adopted the innovative approach of applying these character likenesses to historical figures from that time period. Thus, while Kazuma Kiryu's likeness is once again utilized, he portrays the historical samurai Sakamoto Ryma. To all intents and purposes, everything else is Kiryu, including his personality and the voice actor, Takaya Kuroda.

Notably, Like a Dragon: Ishin! does not include the English dubbing that has become standard for the series. It is entirely Japanese, in part because Ishin is a remake of a previously Japanese-only title.

At the time of its initial release in 2014, Yakuza 0, Yakuza 6, Judgment, and Yakuza: Like a Dragon did not exist. With all these new titles, however, there are more characters to — for lack of a better term — "port over" into Ishin. It means the return of numerous fan-favorite characters who have only appeared in one mainline title to date.
